Ability to ascend is directly tied to the exact degree in which one can overcome their Pain.
This relates to the Moon and its Lunar essence which we must overcome & to the Sun and its Solar essence which we evolve towards.

Repentance & heartfelt desire to evolve in harmony seem to be the only way such Spirits find the opportunity to return to the flock. This opportunity apparently entails one of intense self-sacrifice & service to others as Ascension is largely dictated by Physics, though assuredly Grace could always be factored in.
